Introduction

Good morning. Today, we turn to a powerful and thought-provoking statement made by Jesus in John 5:30: "By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but Him who sent me." This verse raises a profound question: Why did Jesus, the Son of God, say that He could do nothing on His own? In this message, we will explore the humility, unity, and dependence that Jesus modeled for us, and what this means for our own relationship with God.

Scripture Reference: John 5:30

"By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but Him who sent me."

Jesus’ Dependence on the Father

1. The Unity of the Father and the Son

   - When Jesus said, "I can do nothing on my own," He was expressing the perfect unity between Himself and the Father. Jesus did not act independently because He was fully in tune with the will of God. This verse highlights that Jesus' words, actions, and judgments all flowed from His intimate relationship with the Father. His entire ministry was an expression of God's will.

   - Scripture Reference: "The Son can do nothing by Himself; He can do only what He sees His Father doing." (John 5:19)

2. A Model of Humility

   - Jesus, though fully God, chose to humble Himself and live in complete obedience to the Father. His statement in John 5:30 is a demonstration of His humility, acknowledging that His mission on earth was not self-directed but in total submission to God. Jesus’ humility is an example for all believers. If the Son of God relied on the Father, how much more should we?

   - Scripture Reference: "Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, He made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant." (Philippians 2:6-7)

The Importance of Dependence on God

1. Jesus’ Judgment Is Just

   - Jesus said that His judgment was just because He sought not to please Himself but to please the Father. His ability to render perfect judgments was not based on human reasoning or self-interest but on His complete alignment with God's will. This teaches us that true justice and righteousness come from dependence on God’s wisdom, not our own.

  - Scripture Reference: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding." (Proverbs 3:5)

2. Jesus as the Perfect Example of Dependence

   - In John 5:30, Jesus showed us that true power and authority come from dependence on God, not from autonomy. Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus demonstrated complete reliance on the Father. Whether in prayer, healing, teaching, or judging, Jesus modeled a life of perfect submission and trust in God. This reliance was not a sign of weakness, but of His profound relationship with the Father.

What This Means for Us

1. Our Own Dependence on God

   - Just as Jesus lived in complete dependence on the Father, we too are called to live in dependence on God. In a world that values independence and self-reliance, the Christian life is one of trust and surrender to God’s will. When we rely on our own strength, we miss out on the power and guidance that comes from walking in unity with God. Jesus’ statement challenges us to place our trust fully in God’s plan for our lives.

   - Scripture Reference: "Apart from Me, you can do nothing." (John 15:5)

2. Living to Please God, Not Ourselves

   - Jesus said that His judgment was just because He sought to please the Father, not Himself. This is a powerful reminder for us to examine our own motivations. Are we living to please ourselves, or are we seeking to align our lives with God’s will? Like Jesus, we are called to live lives that seek to glorify God in everything we do. This requires humility, surrender, and a deep dependence on God’s guidance.

   - Scripture Reference: "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31)

Application for Our Lives

1. Walking in Humility and Obedience

   - Jesus’ words in John 5:30 remind us of the importance of walking in humility and obedience. We are not called to live for our own purposes but to live for God’s glory. In every decision, in every action, let us seek to do the will of the Father, just as Jesus did.

2. Relying on God’s Strength, Not Our Own

   - Jesus’ dependence on the Father teaches us the importance of relying on God’s strength and wisdom. In our daily lives, we face challenges that we cannot overcome on our own. But when we depend on God, we find the strength, wisdom, and guidance we need to navigate life’s difficulties.

Conclusion

In John 5:30, Jesus demonstrated a life of perfect dependence on the Father. He could do nothing on His own, and neither can we. As followers of Christ, we are called to live in humility, surrender, and complete trust in God’s will. Let us learn from Jesus’ example and live lives that seek to glorify the Father in all things.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, we thank You for the example of Jesus, who lived in perfect dependence on You. Help us to surrender our own will and to live in complete trust and obedience to You. May we seek to glorify You in everything we do. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
