Introduction

Good morning. Today, we reflect on one of the most powerful moments in the Gospels, recorded in Matthew 27:51-53. This passage speaks of the curtain of the temple being torn in two at the moment of Jesus’ death. This dramatic event is rich with symbolism and meaning. It not only marked the end of Jesus’ suffering but also signaled the beginning of a new era in God's relationship with humanity. The tearing of the curtain reveals deep theological truths about access to God, the end of the old covenant, and the fulfillment of prophecy. Let’s explore what this means for us today.

Scripture Reference: Matthew 27:51-53

"At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split, and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people." (Matthew 27:51-53)

The Significance of the Curtain

1. The Curtain as a Symbol of Separation

   - The curtain in the temple was not just an ordinary piece of fabric. It separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place, where the presence of God dwelled. Only the high priest could enter the Most Holy Place, and only once a year, to offer a sacrifice for the sins of the people. The curtain symbolized the separation between a holy God and sinful humanity.

   - Scripture Reference: "Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place." (Hebrews 9:3)

2. The Tearing of the Curtain: Access to God

   - When Jesus died, the curtain was torn in two from top to bottom, symbolizing that the barrier between God and humanity had been removed. Through Jesus' sacrifice, we now have direct access to God. No longer is there a need for a human high priest to mediate on our behalf. Jesus became our eternal High Priest, and through Him, we can boldly enter the presence of God.

   - Scripture Reference: "Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body..." (Hebrews 10:19-20)

3. The End of the Old Covenant

   - The tearing of the curtain also marked the end of the old covenant and the beginning of the new covenant. The old sacrificial system was fulfilled and completed in Jesus. No longer would the blood of animals be needed to atone for sin. Jesus’ death was the final and perfect sacrifice, sufficient for all time.

   - Scripture Reference: "For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance." (Hebrews 9:15)

The Earthquake and Resurrection of the Saints

1. The Earthquake: A Cosmic Response

   - At the moment of Jesus’ death, the earth shook, and rocks split apart. This was no ordinary event—it was a cosmic response to the most important moment in history. Creation itself responded to the death of the Creator. The shaking of the earth symbolized the shaking of the old order and the inauguration of the new creation through Christ.

   - Scripture Reference: "The earth shook, the rocks split, and the tombs broke open." (Matthew 27:51-52)

2. The Resurrection of the Saints

   - The raising of the holy people from their tombs foreshadows the resurrection that believers will experience at the end of time. These resurrections were a sign that Jesus’ death and resurrection had defeated death itself. It was a foretaste of the hope we have in Christ—eternal life and resurrection from the dead.

   - Scripture Reference: "The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life." (Matthew 27:52)

What This Means for Us Today

1. Access to God

   - The tearing of the curtain means that we no longer need a mediator to approach God. Through Jesus, we have direct access to the Father. We can come boldly into His presence, bringing our prayers, confessions, and praises, knowing that the way has been made open for us.

   - Scripture Reference: "Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need." (Hebrews 4:16)

2. The Power of Jesus' Sacrifice

   - The tearing of the curtain reminds us of the power of Jesus’ sacrifice. His death was not just an event in history—it changed everything. It opened the way for us to be reconciled to God, to experience forgiveness, and to live in a new relationship with Him.

   - Scripture Reference: "For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God." (1 Peter 3:18)

3. Hope of Resurrection

   - Just as the saints were raised to life after Jesus’ resurrection, so too do we have the hope of eternal life. The tearing of the curtain, the earthquake, and the resurrection of the saints all point to the final victory over death that Jesus accomplished through His death and resurrection.

   - Scripture Reference: "For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed." (1 Corinthians 15:52)

Conclusion

The tearing of the curtain in the temple at the moment of Jesus’ death was a powerful and symbolic event. It marked the end of the old covenant, the opening of direct access to God, and the beginning of a new relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. As we reflect on this profound moment, may we be reminded of the great privilege we have to approach God freely and the hope we have in the resurrection through Jesus. Let us live in the light of this truth, drawing near to God with confidence, knowing that the way has been made open for us.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, we thank You for the sacrifice of Jesus that tore the curtain and opened the way for us to come into Your presence. Help us to live in the reality of this truth, always approaching You with confidence and trust. May we never take for granted the access we have to You through Christ. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
